REPORT #18 - Monday, January 5, 2009

MEN’S BASKETBALL (10-4, 2-0 BIG EAST)...The men’s basketball team went 2-0 this past week and is now 2-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time since 2006-07 and the third time since 2002-03. On Wednesday, December 31, the Friars defeated St. John’s by a score of 75-54 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The New Year’s Eve win was the first BIG EAST victory for PC Head Coach Keno Davis who joins Gordy Chiesa and Rick Barnes as the only Friar coaches to win their league debuts. Senior Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) paced PC with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added three blocks. On Saturday, January 3 against DePaul at the Dunk, Providence held off DePaul, 62-54. Senior guard Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) led the Friars with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. The Blue Demons shot only 35.1 percent (20-of-57) for the game, including a meager 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from 3-point territory. PC held both St. John’s and DePaul to 54 points, which is the lowest output for a PC opponent this year. Senior Geoff M
cDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) chipped in his fourth double-double of the season and 26th of his career with 13 points and 10 rebounds against DePaul. The Friars hit the road for their first two BIG EAST away games, starting with Cincinnati on Wednesday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. PC travels to the nation’s capital on Saturday, January 10 for a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Georgetown Hoyas.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (6-7, 0-1 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s basketball team posted a 0-2 record last week. On December 31, the Friars were defeated by No. 6/11 Duke, 66-49, in Providence, R.I. Senior Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) posted season-highs of 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Friars. Senior Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) chipped in 11 points and six boards. On January 3, the Friars fell to St. John’s in the 2009 BIG EAST opener at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. by a score of 57-52. Junior Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) led the Friars with 13 points, while Darrian hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Trinity Hull (Cranston, R.I.) came off the bench to score a season-high 11 points. The Friars outrebounded each of their opponents on the week. They hauled in a season-high 50 boards against Duke for a +8 advantage on the glass (50-42) and held a 45-39 edge in rebounding against St. John’s. Providence also rejected a season-high 10 blocked shots vs. St.
John’s. The Friars return to action on Wednesday, January 7 against Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (10-7-2, 5-2-1 HOCKEY EAST)... In its only contest of the week, the women’s ice hockey team earned a hard fought, 4-3, victory over the Cornell Big Red on Sunday, January 4. After falling behind, 3-0, the Friars responded with four unanswered goals, three in the second period, to come away with their 10th victory of the season. At 15:33 of the first period, the Friars made a switch in the PC cage. Coach Deraney brought Danielle Ciarletta (Chanhassen, Minn.) off the bench to replace freshman Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) in hope of lighting a fire on the Providence bench. In her first action since earning a 2-2 tie with Niagara on Nov. 22, Ciarletta came in and suffocated the streaking Big Red offense. The senior netminder denied all 22 shots she faced to lead PC back from a 3-0 deficit. Providence saw goals from Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio), Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.), Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) and Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Freshman forward Laura Veharanta (La Ve
rne, Calif.) was named Hockey East Rookie of the Month after registering five points (3g, 2a) in PC’s three games in December. The Friars are in action next when they play Cornell on Monday, January 5 beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.

MEN’S HOCKEY (3-12-1, 0-8-1 HOCKEY EAST)... The men’s hockey team did nto compete last week. The Friars will not play until Saturday, January 10, 2009 when they host UMass Lowell at Schneider Arena.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK...The Providence College women’s indoor track team did not compete last week. The women look forward to their next competion at the University of Rhode Island Invitational on January 16, 2009.

MEN’S INDOOR TRACK...The Providence College men’s indoor track team did not compete last week. The Friar men look forward to the next competion at the University of Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday, January 17, 2009.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING (2-6)...The Providence College women’s swimming & diving team did not compete last week. The Friars return to head-to-head action on January 17 when they travel to Orono, Maine to take on the University of Maine at 11:00 a.m.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Sharaud Curry (Jr., Gainesville, Ga.)...Curry averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and shot 45.8 percent (11-24) from the field as the Friars earned two BIG EAST wins last week over St. John’s and DePaul. He had a game-high 16 points and eight assists in the victory over St. John’s on December 31. On January 3, he recorded 13 points and five rebounds in the win over DePaul.
Shantee Darrian (Sr., F, Trenton, N.J.)… Darrian had a stellar week for the Friars despite losses to No. 6/11 Duke and St. John’s in the 2009 BIG EAST opener. She averaged a double-double with 10.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. She also contributed 1.5 blocks, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Twelve of her 29 rebounds on the week came off the offensive glass. Darrian now owns 570 rebounds in her career (64 games) and moved into 18th place on Providence’s career rebounding list. She has pulled down double-digit boards in each of the Friars’ last three games, and four times overall on the year. Darrian posted season-highs of 13 points and 15 boards against the No. 6/11 Blue Devils.
