PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WEEKLY ATHLETIC UPDATE

MEN’S BASKETBALL (19-13, 10-8 BIG EAST)...The men’s basketball team posted a 1-1 record last week at the BIG EAST Tournament in New York, N.Y. this past week. On Wednesday, March 11, the Friars defeated DePaul, 83-74, in the BIG EAST Tournament Second Round. Junior Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) and senior Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) combined for 48 points to lead the Friars. Curry posted 25, while Efejuku netted 23, including 15 points in the decisive second half. The victory was the first for the Friars in the BIG EAST Tournament since 2003. On Thursday, March 12, the Friars lost to No. 5/5 Louisville, 73-55, in the quarterfinals. Efejuku posted 17 points for the Friars, but Louisville capitalized on 26 PC turnovers to secure the victory.
On Sunday, the Friars earned a bid to the National Invitational Tournament and were selected as a No. 5 seed. PC will take on Miami (Fla.) on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Tickets range from $10-15 and can be purchased online at friars.com, or by calling the Providence College ticket office at (401) 865-GOPC.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK... The women’s indoor track team competed on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14 at the NCAA Championships at Texas A&M. Providence was represented by senior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Sask.) who ran in the 5,000 meters. Doetzel ran to a fifth place finish in a time of 16:00.45, earning All-America honors.

MEN’S INDOOR TRACK... The men’s indoor track team competed on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14 at the NCAA Championships at Texas A&M. The Friars were represented by junior Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) and sophomore David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland), who both competed in the qualifying heats in the mile on Friday. Both runners qualified for the finals on Saturday, with McLaren earning a first place finish in 4:01.36 and McCarthy placing fourth with a time of 4:04.713. In the finals on Saturday, McCarthy and McLaren finished fourth (4:02.24) and fifth (4:02.51), respectively. For their finishes, each earned All-America honors.

TENNIS (2-2).... The tennis team did not compete last week. The Friars return to action on Sunday, March 22 when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on Syracuse at 9:00 a.m.

SOFTBALL (3-16, 0-0 BIG EAST)... The softball team posted a 0-6 record during Spring Break last week. The Friars were defeated in a double header by Cal Poly on March 10 and then played at the Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside, Calif. Senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) led the Friars as she batted 10-for-15 (.667) with one double, one triple and three RBIs. The Friars are back in action on Sunday, March 22 when they play a home-opening double header against Yale.

LACROSSE (1-4, 1-0 MAAC)...The Providence College men’s lacrosse team posted a 1-1 record last week. On Wednesday, March 11, the Friars were defeated by No. 6/8 North Carolina, 14-7, in Chapel Hill, N.C. Senior Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) and junior Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) each posted four points on a goal and three assists, while freshman Evan Olsen (Tampa, Fla.) added two scores for PC.
On Saturday, March 14, the Friars earned their first win of the season, defeating VMI, 7-6, in the team’s MAAC opener in Lexington, Va. Tigh tied a career-high with four goals and Labadini added five points on two goals and three assists for PC. Senior goaltender Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) earned the win for the Friars and is now 1-4 on the season. Bryan played all 60:00 minutes in goal for PC, recording eight saves while allowing only six goals. Providence is now 7-4 in MAAC openers under Head Coach Chris Burdick.
This week, the Friars host Quinnipiac on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. On Saturday, March 21, Providence travels to Staten Island, N.Y. for a 2:00 p.m. contest at Wagner, looking to improve to 2-0 in the MAAC.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Bobby Labadini (Sr., Westford, Mass.)... Labadini posted nine points on three goals and six assists in a 1-1 week for the men’s lacrosse team. The 6-1 senior recorded a goal and three assists at No. 6/8 North Carolina on Wednesday and notched two goals and three assists at VMI on Saturday.

David McCarthy (So., Waterford, Ireland)... McCarthy earned All-America honors for finishing in fourth place in the mile in a time of 4:02.24 at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, March 14 at Texas A&M.

Danette Doetzel (Sr., Macklin, Sask.)... Doetzel earned All-America honors as she finished in fifth place in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:00.45 on Friday, March 13 at the NCAA Championships at Texas A&M.

Hayden McLaren (Jr., Christchurch, New Zealand)... McLaren earned All-America honors for finishing the mile in fifth in a time of 4:02.51 at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, March 14 at Texas A&M.
