WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College women’s cross country team returns to action on Saturday, September 20, when the Friars compete at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men’s cross country team returns to action on Saturday, September 20, when the Friars compete at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.

MEN’S SOCCER (2-0-1, 0-0 BIG EAST)... The Providence College men’s soccer team posted a 0-0-1 record last week. The Friars tied Holy Cross, 1-1, in double overtime on Friday, September 5. Junior Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) scored late in the first half to give the Friars the lead. Classmate Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) made a season-high five saves. The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, September 9 when they face the University of Rhode Island at 3:00 p.m.

FIELD HOCKEY (3-1, 0-0 BIG EAST)... The Providence College field hockey team posted a 2-0 record last week with victories over Northeastern (2-1) on September 4 and Yale (5-0) on September 7. Sophomore Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) and junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) each scored four points on the week. Lipski notched one goal and two assists, while Poulin checked in with two goals. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) registered seven saves in two games, including a five-save performance against regional foe Northeastern. Chamberlain followed with her first shut-out victory of the season against Yale. It also marked the 13th shutout of her career. Providence returns to action on Wednesday, September 10 against Holy Cross at 7:00 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (3-1, 0-0 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s soccer team went 1-1 in their two games last week. On Thursday, September 4, the Friars faced Holy Cross at Glay Field. Junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied a goal and an assist in the Friars’ 3-0 victory. Freshman Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) and senior Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) also scored in the victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) notched her second straight clean sheet with the victory. On Sunday, September 7, Providence took on Manhattan and fell 2-1 in double overtime. Collins scored her second goal in as many games in the first half. The Friars will travel to Hartford, Conn. to take on the Hawks of the University of Hartford on Thursday, September 11 and then return to Glay on Sunday, September 14 for a 1:00 game against Davidson.

VOLLEYBALL (4-4)...The Providence College volleyball team played four matches last week and compiled a 2-2 record. The Friars defeated Holy Cross, 3-0, in the team’s home opener on Wednesday, September 3. Over the weekend, Providence competed in the Maine Tournament in Orono, Maine. On Friday, September 5, the Friars were defeated by Maine, 3-2. PC played two matches on Saturday, September 6, beating Quinnipiac, 3-0, and falling to Kent State, 3-1. Against Quinnipiac, senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded five blocks, moving her past Jocelyn Cole and into third place on PC’s all-time list with 350 for her career. This week, Providence competes in the Holy Cross tournament on Friday, September 12 and Saturday, September 13. The Friars face the host Crusaders on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and battle Wagner (10:00 a.m.) and Bryant (4:00 p.m.) on Saturday.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (0-0)... The Providence College women’s tennis team opened its 2008 fall season on Sunday, September 7 in Fairfield, Conn. at the Sacred Heart Doubles Tournament. Representing the Friars in the No. 1 spot was the duo of seniors Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.). In the No. 2 position was junior Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.) and sophomore Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India). Splitting time in the No. 3 slot was the duo of sophomores Liz Gillis (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and Courtney Fuller (Newtown, Conn.) as well as senior Katie-Sue Scullin (Liverpool, N.Y.) and freshman Melanie Albert. Scullin and Albert were the only Friars on the day to earn a win, when they defeated Sacred Heart’s Kristina Chao and Lindsey Scierka, 8-7. The Friars face their first head-to-head matchup of the season on Saturday, September 13 when they travel to in-state rival Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. Matches are set to begin at 10:30 a.m.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Jaime Lipski (So., Dallas, Pa.)...Lipski led the Friar field hockey team to a 2-0 record last week with four points on one goal and two assists. Her lone goal on the week proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Northeastern on September 4. She followed that performance with two assists in a 5-0 victory against Yale on September 7.
Courtney Collins (Fr., North Wales, Pa.)...Collins, a member of the Providence women’s soccer team, scored two goals in the Friars two games last week.
Tim Ritter (Jr., Weston, Mass.)... Ritter, a member of the Providence men’s soccer team, scored PC’s goal in a 1-1 tie at Holy Cross on Friday, September 5.
