REPORT #4 - Monday, September 22, 2008

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College women’s cross country team placed 13th-overall at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., the site of the 2008 BIG EAST Championship. The team was led by sophomore Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.), who placed 33rd (23:10.2) over the difficult 6,000 meter course. The other scorers for the squad included junior Amie Schumacher (Wolcott, Conn.), 80th (23:04.7), senior Katherine Schock, 92nd (24:18.7), freshman Sara Graney (Palisades, N.Y.), 95th (24:24.1) and junior Samantha Stadt (Pearl River, N.Y.), 105th (24:36.8). The next race for the Friars is Friday, October 3, when they compete at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men’s cross country team placed 15th-overall at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., the site of the 2008 BIG EAST Championship. The team was led by freshman Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.), who placed 67th (26:04) over the grueling 8,000 meter course, in a race of nearly 300 competitors. The other scorers for the squad included sophomore Stephen Hankinson (Summit, N.J.), 81st (26:24.7), sophomore Nicholas Barao (Riverside, R.I.), 119th (26:50.4), senior Ben Saviet (Sutton, Mass.), 129th (27:00.1) and freshman Zachary Hoagland (Hatfield, Pa.), 221st (28:27.6). The next race for the Friars is Friday October 3, 2008 when they compete at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

MEN’S SOCCER (3-1-3, 1-1-1 BIG EAST)... The No. 20/17 men’s soccer team posted a 0-1-2 mark last week. On Monday, September 15, Providence tied Northeastern, 0-0, in Brookline, Mass. The Friars then played BIG EAST foe Cincinnati to a scoreless draw on Friday, September 21 and extended their unbeaten streak to six games, their longest since 2005 when they began the season with a nine-match unbeaten streak (4-0-5). Providence then suffered its first setback of the season, a 1-0, home loss to No. 19/16 Louisville on Sunday, September 21. The Friars are back in action on Friday, September 21 with a road match at Syracuse.

FIELD HOCKEY (5-3, 0-1 BIG EAST)... The Providence College field hockey team fell to fourth-ranked Connecticut, 2-1, in overtime during its only action of the week on September 19 in Storrs, Conn. Sophomore Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) scored the Friars’ lone goal to tie the game, 1-1, 22:06 into the game. Junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) was credited with the assist. After a scoreless second half, the Huskies earned the victory just 6:50 into overtime during a penalty corner. Connecticut held a 17-11 advantage in shot attempts, but the two teams were even in shots on goal, at seven apiece. The Friars owned a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded five saves in the game. PC returns to action against No. 3 Syracuse on Friday, September 26 at 6:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-2, 0-1 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s soccer team went 1-1 this past weekend. On Friday, September 19, the Friars traveled to UConn to take on the Huskies. After staying competitive throughout the contest, a Husky goal in the 87th minute proved to be the game winner as Providence fell, 1-0. On Sunday, September 21, the Friars battled UMass at Glay Field. Junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) gained possession of the ball 30 yards out from the Minutewomen net. After the UMass goalie mishandled possession of a shot, Camburn took control of the ball and tapped it into the back of the net to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. Sophomore goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) tallied her third clean sheet of the season in the victory. In the two contests, Schott stopped 14 shots on 30 attempts. PC will continue their BIG EAST slate on Thursday, September 26 against Marquette at Glay Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The Friars will then travel to USF to take on the Bulls on Sunday, September 29 at 11:00 a.m.

VOLLEYBALL (7-8)...The Providence College volleyball team posted a 1-3 record this past week. On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Friars dropped a 3-0 contest to Brown. Junior Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) registered eight digs, five kills and a service ace against the Bears. Over the weekend, Providence hosted the Fifth Annual Friar Classic. On Friday, Sept. 19, the Friars fell to Sacred Heart, 3-2. Senior setter Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) played her best all-around match of the season against the Pioneers, registering a double-double with 24 assists and a season-high 16 digs. On Saturday, Sept. 20, Providence defeated Coppin State, 3-0, and lost to Texas-El Paso, 3-0. Against Coppin State, Sheehan posted three service aces, passing Aileen Koprowski and moving into second place on the Friar all-time service aces list with 147. In the setback to UTEP, senior Kelly Krahenbuhl (Larkspur, Colo.) paced the Friars defensively, recording 13 digs. The 5-7 defensive specialist ranks first on the team with 190 digs on the year.
This week, Providence hosts Manhattan on Wednesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (1-1)... The Providence College women’s tennis team went 1-0 last week in head-to-head action, defeating the University of Hartford, 7-0, on Tuesday, September 16. Sophomore Liz Gillis (Mattapoisett, Mass.) shined for the Friars, not allowing a game point all day. She won in the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-0, then teamed up with sophomore Courtney Fuller (Newtown, Conn.) in the No. 3 doubles spot to take home an 8-0 victory. The Friars then traveled to Loudonville, N.Y. for the Siena Invitational on Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21. Sophomore Ally Wegner excelled for the Friars, earning a 6-3, 6-4 win in the first round, a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the semifinals, before falling, 6-2, 6-2, in the final match. Providence finished the tournament with an 11-9 singles mark and a 8-4 doubles record. The Friars return to action on Wednesday, September 24 when they host Holy Cross at home in Providence, R.I. Matches are set for a 4:00 p.m. start.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Jill Camburn (Jr., Doylestown, Pa.)...Camburn netted the game winner for the women’s soccer team’s 1-0 victory over UMass on Sunday, September 21.
