WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The No. 12 Providence College women’s cross country squad tied for third place at the Ted Owen Invitational held at Central Connecticut State University on Saturday, September 26. The Friars received 78 points to finish tied for third overall with Bryant University. The Friars were led by freshman Darlene Gaudet (Londonderry, N.H.), who placed eighth in a time of 18:45.22. Junior Christina Conley (Andover, Mass.) placed 10th (19:05.57) and senior Amie Schumacher was close behind in 11th place (19:06.65).
The next race for the Friars is the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, October 2 in South Bend, Ind. The meet will begin at 4:15 p.m.
 
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The No. 16 Providence College men’s cross country squad claimed first place at the Ted Owen Invitational held at Central Connecticut State University on Saturday, September 26. The team received a perfect score of 15 points over Central Connecticut State University (47 points) and Bryant University (78 points). The Friars took the top-five places in the race, led by sophomore Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.), who claimed the individual title in a time of 25:36.82. Junior Stephen Hankinson (Summit, N.J.) placed second (26:11.16), followed closely by freshman Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) in a time of 26:11.92 for third place. Fourth and fifth places went to freshman Patrick Desabato (Narberth, Penn.) and sophomore Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) who finished in 26:14.45 and 26:26.87, respectively.
The next race for the Friars is the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, October 2 in South Bend, Ind. The meet will begin at 5:00 p.m.
 
FIELD HOCKEY (3-6, 0-2 BIG EAST)... The No. 19 Providence College women’s field hockey team posted an 0-2 record last week. The Friars lost to BIG EAST Conference opponent No. 6 Syracuse, 2-1, on Saturday, September 26 in Syracuse, N.Y. Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) scored the lone goal for Providence. Senior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) had two defensive saves in the game. The Friars also fell to non-conference opponent Albany, 2-1, on Sunday, September 27 in Albany, N.Y. Hudson again was the lone goal scorer for the Friars.
The Friars are back in action next weekend as they host BIG EAST Conference opponent Villanova on Saturday, October 3 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be held at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
 
MEN’S SOCCER (4-3-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST)... The Providence College men’s soccer team posted a 1-0-1 record last week. The Friars defeated Syracuse, 1-0, on Friday, September 25 to earn their first BIG EAST win of the season. Junior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) scored the lone goal of the match late in the first half. Classmate Nick Cianci (West Hartford, Conn.) assisted on the goal, while goalkeeper Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) made two saves to earn the shutout. On Sunday, September 27, Murray made four saves as Providence and No. 18 St. John’s played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw. It marked Murray’s fifth shutout of the season and the 23rd of his career.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 3 at 1:00 p.m. when they play at Pittsburgh.
 
WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-4-2, 0-2-1 BIG EAST)… The Providence College women’s soccer team posted a 0-1-1 record last week. The Friars were defeated by Syracuse, 2-1, in double overtime on Thursday, September 24 in Syracuse, N.Y. Sophomore Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) scored the Friars’ lone goal of the game and her second of the season in the 69th minute. The Friars returned home to host No. 15/23 St. John’s on Sunday, September 27. The game went into double overtime and ended in a 1-1 tie. Providence would score in the 15th minute when Collins sent a through ball to a streaking Jill Camburn (Doylestown Pa.), who tallied her fifth goal of the season.
The Friars continue their BIG EAST schedule when they host Georgetown on Friday, October 2 at 3:00 p.m. and Villanova on Sunday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m.
 
VOLLEYBALL (8-12)... The Providence College volleyball team posted a 2-1 record this past week in the Sixth Annual Friar Classic, held in Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. On Friday, September 25, the Friars defeated St. Francis (N.Y.), 3-0. In the match against the Terriers, sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Friars with 13 kills, hit at a blistering .478 clip and recorded seven total blocks and two service aces. On Saturday, September 26, Providence defeated Coppin State, 3-0, and lost to tournament champion New Hampshire, 3-0. Sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) fueled the Providence attack with 28 assists, while freshman defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) notched eight digs to pace the team defensively against the Eagles.
This week, the Friars travel to Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. for a rematch with St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m.
 
WOMEN’S TENNIS (3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s tennis team defeated Bryant University, 5-2, on Wednesday, September 23. The Friars saw strong play from freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) who defeated her opponent in the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Courtney Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) won a three-set match that lasted more than three hours. She won five games in a row in the third set to come back from a 2-5 deficit. Providence also got strong wins out of Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) and Melanie Albert (Sanibel, Fla.). With the victory, the Friars improved to 3-0 in head-to-head matches. The Friars also competed in the ITA Eastern Championships in West Point, N.Y. over the weekend. In the tournament, Aviles-Duron continued her strong play by defeating her first two opponents (including a win against fifth seed Elizabeth Adams of Syracuse) to reach the quarterfinals of the No. 1 singles tournament.
The women’s tennis team is back in action on Thursday, October 1 when they take on the University of Rhode Island in a home contest at 3:30 p.m.
 
WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY (0-0-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East)... The Providence College women’s hockey team faced off against McGill University, of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport League, in an exhibition match on Saturday, September 26 and fell by a score of 7-4. The Friars got two goals from sophomore Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.), while juniors Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) and Jean O’Neill (Strafford, Pa.) each netted a goal.
PC will begin the regular season with a pair of Hockey East games against Maine this weekend. Game one will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, while game two will be played on Saturday, October 3 at 4:00 p.m. Both games will take place in Schneider Arena.
