The focus of this program is Turkish folk music, specifically the traditional song form, deyis. Over the past ten years, the widely-renowned duo Erkan Ogur and Ismail Hakki Demircioglu have created a new contemporary standard for the performance of this repertoire, bringing the distinctive repertoire of the ethno-religious group Anatolia known as Alevi and the music of the Turkish folk singer-poets (Asik) to a wider audience outside of Turkey. The DÜNYA Ensemble will supplement this duo's unique sound in an interactive musical dialogue culminating in a collective performance.
Erkan Ogur is an internationally acclaimed singer and multi instrumentalist whose scope of musicianship has fascinated audiences across the globe for several decades. He has performed with the likes of Mazhar Fuat Ozkan, Bülent Ortaçgil and Djivan Gasparian. He has given his unique and unmistakable sound to such unforgettable tracks as "Gullerin Icinden" and "Bir Omurluk Misafir. He invented the fretless classical guitar and introduced the world to the beauty of this unique sound. The film music he composed for "Eskiya" (1996) has given high visibility in the international media. One of theinstruments he performs with is the kopuz (a Turkish long-necked lute). His latest work features him on this instrument performing Turkish folk music with Ismail Hakki Demircioglu.
DÜNYA (the Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Greek word for "world") is a Turkish world music ensemble based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Its goal is to present a contemporary view of a wide range of Turkish traditions, alone and in interaction with other world traditions, through performance, recording, publication and other educational activities. Many DÜNYA programs involve collaborations which cross boundaries of style and tradition since we believe that when carefully positioned next to other musics Western classical music and Jazz, religious music of many regions and creeds, popular music its many forms the color of Turkish music become even more vivid than when alone.
