REPORT #6 - Monday, October 6, 2008
MEN’S SOCCER (3-4-3, 1-4-1 BIG EAST)... In its lone match last week, the men’s soccer team was defeated, 3-2, in overtime at Seton Hall on Saturday, October 4. The Friars trailed, 2-0, at halftime, but early second half goals by junior Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) and senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) tied the match, 2-2. The Friars had solid opportunities to take the lead, but were unable to convert in the second half as the game moved into overtime. The Pirates scored three minutes into the extra session to seal the win. Providence is back in action on Wednesday, October 8 with a with a home match against No. 7/4 Connecticut beginning at 3:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-3-3, 0-2-3 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s soccer team posted a 0-0-2 record this past weekend. On Friday, October 3 the Friars traveled to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats. Junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) evened the game at 1-1 in the second half with her third goal of the season, off a pass from classmate Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.). Neither team would score in overtime to preserve the 1-1 final score. On Sunday, October 5, Providence took on the Louisville Cardinals in BIG EAST action. Senior Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) took the rebound off a Camburn shot and would score to give the Friars an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. The Cardinals were able to even the game at 1-1 later in the half, and the score would remain tied at the end of the game. PC will next take on West Virginia in Morgantown, on Friday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. The Friars will then conclude their road trip with a game at Pittsburgh on Sunday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m.
FIELD HOCKEY (8-5, 1-2 BIG EAST)... The Providence field hockey team posted a 2-1 record last week. The Friars started the week with a 2-1 double-overtime victory against 13th-ranked Boston College on October 3 in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime during the 91st minute of play to help Providence secure the victory. Junior Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded two saves and allowed just one goal in 91 minutes of play.
On October 4, the Friars posted a 3-0 shut-out victory over BIG EAST foe Villanova in Villanova, Pa. Junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) scored Providence’s first goal of the day and the team never looked back. Junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) and sophomore Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.) also scored one goal apiece in the win. Chamberlain made four saves to collect her fourth shutout of the season, and 16th of her career.
On October 5, Providence completed the week with a 2-0 loss to 12th-ranked Princeton in Princeton, N.J. Chamberlain recorded a season-high 14 saves in the game.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, October 11 against BIG EAST foe Rutgers at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The contest marks the beginning of a four-game home stand.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men’s cross country team competed at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, October 3 in South Bend, Ind. The squad placed fourth overall (148 points), and was led by sophomore David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland). McCarthy completed the course in a time of 23:58 for 12th-place individually. Junior Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) placed 23rd (24:14), followed by freshman Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) who took 25th (24:16). Rounding out the scoring members of the team were senior Richard Yeates (Dublin, Ireland), who placed 27th (24:17) and Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) who finished 61st (24:42). Providence returns to action on Saturday, October 11 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College women’s cross country team placed seventh at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, October 3 in South Bend, Ind. Senior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Sask.) led the charge individually, placing ninth on the 5k course in 16:56. Senior Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) finished 48th (17:29). Freshman Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) placed 51st (17:31). Junior Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine) finished 69th (17:42) and Junior Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) placed 73rd (17:45). Providence returns to action on Saturday, October 11 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
VOLLEYBALL (10-10)...The Providence College volleyball team posted a 2-2 record this past week. On Wednesday, October 1, the Friars fell to Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0. Senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted her second consecutive double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs against the Knights. Over the weekend, PC went 2-1 in the Cougar Invitational in Chicago, Ill. Providence was defeated by SIU-Edwardsville, 3-0, on Friday, October 3, and beat Quinnipiac, 3-1, and Chicago State, 3-1, on Saturday, October 4. Senior Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) led the Friars to a 2-0 record on Saturday, recording a season-high 47 assists against Quinnipiac and 42 against Chicago State. This week, Providence faces Sacred Heart on Tuesday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
WOMEN’S TENNIS (2-2)... The Providence College women’s tennis team went 0-1 last week, falling to in-state rival the University of Rhode Island, 7-0, on Wednesday, October 1. Senior Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.) played strong for the Friars, but fell in the No. 3 singles spot to URI’s Pam Emery, 6-1, 6-2. Gilroy teamed up with junior Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.) in the No. 2 doubles position. The pair battled but fell 8-4. The Friars compete next at the New England Championships on Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12 in Fairfield, Conn. Match times have not been set yet.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY (0-2)... No. 9 women’s ice hockey finished the weekend 0-2 after being swept by the Buckeyes of Ohio State. On Friday, Providence was defeated, 2-1. In the loss, freshman Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) scored her first career goal as a Friar. During a power-play, senior forward Mari Pehkonen (Tampere, Finland) directed a face-off towards Veharanta who fired the puck past the Buckeye net-minder for her first collegiate goal. On Saturday, Providence had a 2-1 lead going into the third period but was unable to fend off the Buckeye attack and suffered a heartbreaking defeat, 3-2. Freshman Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) made her first start as a Friar, making 32 saves. Classmate Abby Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) registered her first career goal as she finished a great feed from junior forward Jackie Duncan (Kitchener, Ontario). This weekend, the Friars host two non-conference games. On Friday, Providence faces-off against St. Lawrence at 7:00 p.m. before hosting Colgate on Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. contest. Both games will be held at Schneider Arena.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Jill Camburn (Jr., Doylestown, Pa.)... The junior registered one goal and one assist in the women’s soccer team’s 0-0-2 weekend.
Danette Doetzel (Sr., Macklin, Saskatchewan)... Led the Providence women’s cross country team to a seventh-place team finish at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 3. She was the top Friar finisher, completing the 5K course in a time of 16:56 for ninth place, individually.
David McCarthy (So., Waterford, Ireland)... Led the Providence men’s cross country team to a fourth-place team finish at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 3. McCarthy finished 12th in the race in a time of 23:58.
Jeanette Toney (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.)... Toney led the Friars in kills in all four matches this week. Against Quinnipiac, the 5-10 middle blocker recorded a season-high 22 kills and added seven digs and eight blocks. In the team’s match against Chicago State, she posted 20 kills and also registered a season-high .514 hitting percentage.
