I am pleased to announce that the official address for Providence College has been changed to 1 Cunningham Square, Providence, RI 02918. This change follows the recent dedication of the intersection at River Avenue and Eaton Street – where the main entrance to our campus is located – as Cunningham Square to honor Rev. John F. Cunningham, O.P., the 10th president of Providence College.
It is fitting that the address of Providence College include Father Cunningham’s name as a tribute to his nearly 50 years of devoted service as a beloved faculty member and administrator. A professor of philosophy at the time of his death in December 2006, Father Cunningham was PC's president from 1985-94. Under his leadership, the College expanded from its roots as a commuter school to one that now is recognized as a premier regional liberal arts institution.
Father Cunningham cared deeply about PC’s founding mission as a school for first-generation students. Through the Cunningham Southeast Asian Scholarship Program, established by and later named for him, approximately 65 students have received scholarship aid totaling more than $3.9 million.
As a practical note, the 1 Cunningham Square address will be phased in to the College’s communications and operations over time; all existing stationery and other printed materials with the 549 River Avenue address should be used until new supplies are required. Mail and deliveries sent to both the prior and new address will be delivered. Any new materials will bear the new address.
