PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WEEKLY ATHLETIC UPDATE

MEN’S SOCCER (5-4-3, 3-4-1 BIG EAST)... The men’s soccer team won both of its matches last week as it posted 1-0 victories over No. 13/11 Connecticut on Wednesday, October 8 and West Virginia on Saturday, October 11. In the win over UConn, sophomore Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) scored his second goal of the season, while senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) collected his team-high third assist of the season. It marked PC’s first win over UConn since 1997. Against West Virginia, the Friars scored late in the first half and held off the Mountaineers. Freshman Chris Stoker (Holden, Mass.) tallied his first career goal, while junior A.J. Brown, who was making his first career start, recorded his first career assist.
The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, October 15 with a home match against Bryant University beginning at 3:00 p.m. at PC’s Glay Field.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-5-3, 0-4-3 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s soccer team posted a 0-2 record during BIG EAST play this past weekend. On Friday, October 10 the Friars traveled to West Virginia to take on the nationally ranked Mountaineers. Though sophomore goalkeeper Jill Schott again tied her season high with 10 saves, the Friars would fall, 3-0. On Sunday, October 12, PC concluded its five-game road trip at Pittsburgh. The Panthers would jump out to an early 1-0 lead, but senior Victoria Neff would tie the game on a breakaway goal, forcing overtime. The Panthers were able to put the game away in the 96th minute to win, 2-1.
The Friars will be back in action this weekend with two BIG EAST contests. On Friday, October 17 PC will take on Notre Dame at Glay Field at 3:00 p.m. and then on Sunday, October 19 Providence will battle DePaul at 1:00 p.m.
FIELD HOCKEY (9-6, 2-2 BIG EAST)... The Providence field hockey team posted a 1-1 record last week. On October 11, the Friars posted a pivotal, 2-0, victory against 16th-ranked Rutgers in BIG EAST regular-season action in Providence, R.I. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded nine saves in the cage to earn her fifth shutout of the season and 17th of her career. Junior Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.) and junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) each netted one goal for Providence. On October 12, the Friars fell to Boston University, 2-0, in Providence, R.I. Chamberlain recorded eight saves in the cage.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, October 18 against 11th-ranked Louisville during BIG EAST play. The game is scheduled to start at Noon at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men’s cross country team finished 20th at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass. on Saturday, October 11. Providence scored 548 points. University of Massachusetts Lowell won the team title with 79 points. Boston College’s Tim Ritchie won the men’s varsity race in a time of 24:35. For the Friars, sophomore Stephen Hankinson (Summit, N.J.) led the charge placing 62nd covering the 7,945 meter course in a time of 25:49. Freshman Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.) finished 86th (26:05). Senior Ben Saviet (Sutton, Mass.) placed 110th (26:20). Sophomore Nicholas Barao (Riverside, R.I.) finished 137th (26:37) and freshman Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) placed 153rd (26:46). Freshman Zachary Hoagland (Hatfield, Pa.) finished 231st (27:46) and Edward Jennings (New York, N.Y.) placed 253rd (28:23).
The next race for the Friars is Saturday October 18 when they compete at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College women’s cross country team placed 17th at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass. on October 11. Senior Sarah Morgan (Waikato, New Zealand) led the Friars with a 14th-place finish, covering the five-kilometer course in a time of 18:21, claiming All-New England honors. Next to the finish for Providence, was senior Katherine Schock (Norwood, Mass.) placing 76th (19:11). Sophomore Katherine Leugers (Richmond, Vt.) finished 91st (19:22), junior Amie Schumacher (Wolcott, Conn.) placed 153rd (20:05) and sophomore Christina Conely (Andover, Mass.) was 182nd (20:18) rounding out the scorers for the Friars. The women’s team scored 516 points. Boston College won the meet with 38 points. Andrea Walkonen of Boston University won the women’s varsity race in a time of 17:19.

VOLLEYBALL (11-10)..The Providence College volleyball team posted a 1-0 record this past week. On Tuesday, October 7, the Friars defeated Sacred Heart, 3-0, in Fairfield, Conn. The win was the Friars’ third-straight, tying the team’s longest streak of the season. Against the Pioneers, senior Kelly Krahenbuhl (Larkspur, Colo.) paced the PC defense with 14 digs and added two service aces. Senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added six kills, seven digs and eight total blocks in another strong all-around effort for Providence. Over her last three matches, Toney has compiled an impressive 19 total blocks.
This week, the Friars take on Central Connecticut State at home on Tuesday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. and battle St. Francis (N.Y.) on Friday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.
WOMEN’S TENNIS (2-2)... The Providence College tennis team competed at the New England Tennis Championships in Fairfield, Conn. on Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12. The Friars combined for 31 points over the weekend, finishing sixth out of eight teams. The Friars’ top finishes on the weekend came on the doubles side of competition, earning two top-five finishes. In the No. 1 position, senior Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) and sophomore Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) combined for Providence’s top place all weekend, earning six points from a 2-1 record and a third place finish. In the No. 2 spot, senior Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.) earned fifth place after going 2-1. On the singles side, freshman Melanie Albert (Sanibel, Fla.) was the only Friar to earn a top-five finish. Albert finished the weekend with a 2-1 record, earning fifth place in the No. 4 singles spot.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, October 18 when they host Monmouth University at home in Providence, R.I. The Friars’ final head-to-head match is set for a 10:30 a.m. start.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY (1-3)... Women’s ice hockey finished the weekend, 1-1. The Friars fell to St. Lawence, 3-1, on Friday before earning their first victory in a 6-2 defeat of Colgate on Saturday. Both games were held in Schneider Arena. Against St. Lawrence, freshman goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) registered 26 saves but it wasn’t enough to earn the victory. Classmate Laura Veharanta scored her second goal of the season, a power-play tally, for the lone Friar score.
On Saturday, Providence exploded for six goals in order to earn their first victory of the 2008-09 campaign. Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) tallied two goals on the night while Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) made 42 saves to earn the victory, the first of her career. In a game that saw 26 penalties called, the Friars capitalized with four power-play goals and one short-handed score. PC also received goals from senior Mari Pehkonen (Tampere, Finland), sophomore Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) along with freshmen Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) and Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.).
The Friars are next in action on Saturday, October 18 at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Northeastern for their first Hockey East game of the season. PC will then travel to Vermont on Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. Hockey East contest.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Rachel Chamberlain (Jr., Branford, Conn.)... Chamberlain led the Providence field hockey team to a, 2-0, shut-out victory over No. 16 Rutgers in BIG EAST play on October 11 with nine saves. It marked her fifth shutout of the season and 17th of her career. For the week, she totaled 17 saves, a 1.00 goals against average and a 0.895 save percentage.
Katy Beach (Sr., Cleveland, Ohio)... Beach led women’s ice hockey to a 6-2 victory over Colgate University on Saturday with two power-play goals. She also added an assist on the Friars’ lone tally in Friday’s game against St. Lawrence.
Tim Murray (Jr., Haverhill, Mass.)... Murray led the men’s soccer team to a pair of BIG EAST Conference victories last week. He totaled two shutouts and six saves as the Friars defeated No. 13/11 Connecticut on Wednesday, October 8 and West Virginia on Saturday, October 11.
