REPORT #8 - Monday, October 20, 2008

MEN’S SOCCER (6-5-3, 3-5-1 BIG EAST)... The men’s soccer team posted a 1-1 record last week. The Friars defeated Bryant, 2-0, on Wednesday, October 14. Junior Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) broke a 0-0 deadlock early in the second half with his third goal of the seasin, while freshman Daniel Fabian (Southbury, Conn.) scored his first career goal late in the second half to secure the win. Sophomore Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) assisted on both goals. Junior Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) made three saves to earn his career-high eighth shutout of the season. On Sunday, October 18, the Friars were defeated, 3-1, at No. 9 Notre Dame. Marcin scored PC’s lone goal as senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) was credited with the assist. The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 25 with a road match at Marquette beginning at 4:05 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-7-3, 0-6-3 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s soccer team posted a 0-2 record during BIG EAST play this past weekend. On Friday, October 17, Providence played host to #1/1 Notre Dame at Glay Field. The Irish would go on to defeat the Friars, 5-0. On Sunday, October 19 Providence took on DePaul. The Blue Demons would get a late first half goal to make the score, 1-0. In the second half, the Friars’ best chance for a goal came on junior Tara Ricciardi’s (Wayne, N.J.) shot that nicked the post. Providence would fall by the 1-0 score. The Friars will conclude their season this weekend with two BIG EAST matches. On Friday, October 24, PC will take on St. John’s at Glay Field at 3:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, October 26, Providence will battle Syracuse at 1:00 p.m., with senior day festivities taking place.

FIELD HOCKEY (9-8, 2-3 BIG EAST)... The Providence field hockey team posted an 0-2 record last week. On October 18, the 18th-ranked Friars fell to 11th-ranked Louisville, 4-1, in BIG EAST action in Providence, R.I. Junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) scored the lone Providence goal in the game, off a feed from sophomore Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.). On October 19, the Friars dropped a 1-0 decision to Vermont in Providence, R.I. Providence outshot Vermont, 11-10, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the cage. Providence returns to action on Wednesday, October 22 against cross-city rival Brown at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played on the campus of Brown University on Warner Roof.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men’s cross country team placed ninth (321 points) at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, October 18. Sophomore David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) placed sixth in a time of 23:40.8, to lead the way for the Friars. Junior Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) finished 46th (24:25.1). Senior Richard Yeates (Dublin, Ireland) ran to an 81st-place finish (24:46.1), freshman Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) finished 93rd (24:51.7) and Tom Webb (Williston, Vt.) was 95th (24:52.8), rounding out the top-five scorers for the Friars. The next race for the Friars is Saturday, October 25, 2008 when they compete at the Central Connecticut State Invitational in New Britain, Conn.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College women’s cross country team placed 11th at Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. on October 18. Senior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Sask.) led the charge placing 10th on the 6K course in 20:23.8. Junior Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine) finished 72nd (21:30.8). Junior Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) placed 80th (21:34.9). Freshman Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) placed 84th (21:38.4). Senior Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) finished 88th (21:42.2). The next race for the Friars is Saturday October 25, 2008 when they compete at the Central Connecticut State Invitational in New Britain, Conn.

VOLLEYBALL (12-11)...The Providence College volleyball team posted a 1-1 record this past week. On Tuesday, October 14, the Friars fell to Central Connecticut at home, 3-0. Senior Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) paced the Friars with a solid all-around game in defeat. The co-captain registered six kills, nine assists, seven digs and a service ace. Sheehan also posted a .455 hitting percentage for the match. On Friday, October 17, PC defeated St. Francis, 3-0, in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) reached an important career milestone in the Friar triumph. Toney’s seven blocks moved her past Jennifer Winslow and into second place on Providence’s all-time list. The 5-10 middle blocker now has 402 blocks for her career. The Friars return to action on Tuesday, October 21 with a match against in-state rival Bryant at 7:00 p.m. in Smithfield, R.I.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (2-2)... The Providence College tennis team competed against Monmouth University on Saturday, October 18. Results are unavailable at this time. The Friars return to action on Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25 when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for the ITA Regionals. Match times have yet to be announced.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (2-4, 1-1 HOCKEY EAST)... The Providence College women’s ice hockey team went on the road for the first time in 2008 and split the weekend games. On October 18, PC traveled to Northeastern for the first Hockey East game of the season. The Friars outshot the Huskies but ran into a hot goaltender and fell, 1-0. Senior Danielle Ciarletta made 19 saves on the day and improved her goals against average to 1.54 on the season. On October 19, Providence defeated Vermont to earn its first conference victory of the year. Jackie Duncan (Kitchener, Ontario) had one goal and one assist. Sophomore Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) netted the game winner midway through the second period. Freshman Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) registered her team-leading fourth goal on the season. All four goals have been on the power-play. Freshman Jennifer Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.) earned her first point as a Friar with an assist on Veharanta’s goal. Junior Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) tallied her first goal for Providence as well. Freshman Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) earned the win as she stopped 25 shots on the day.
PC returns to action on Saturday, October 25 when they host #8 Boston College for a Hockey East contest starting at 2:00 p.m. in Schneider Arena.

MEN’S HOCKEY (1-1, 0-1 HOCKEY EAST)... The Providence College men’s hockey team posted a 1-1 record last week as it opened the season. On Friday, October 17, the Friars were defeated, 4-0, by Northeastern at Schneider Arena. It marked the first time since 1997, that the season opener also was the Hockey East opener for the Friars. The following night, the Friars defeated Bowling Green, 4-3, at Schneider Arena. Freshman Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) scored one goal and added two assists, while senior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.), junior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) and senior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) each had one goal and one assist. Senior Chris Mannix (Hubbardston, Mass.) made 29 saves to earn the win. The Friars are back in action on Friday, October 24 with a Hockey East game at UMass Lowell beginning at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING (0-1)...The Providence College women’s swimming & diving team posted an 0-1 record last week. The Friars opened their season on Saturday, October 18 when they hosted Lehigh University at home in Providence, R.I. The Mountain Hawks outswam the Friars to a 151-72 win. Senior Lauren Sepe (Warwick, R.I.) was the only Friar to earn an individual first-place finish, winning the 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:20.82. PC also took first place in the 20-meter freestyle relay, when freshman Caroline Caliri (Marblehead, Mass.), seniors Blair Flynn (Middletown, R.I.) and Christine Bonagura (Rockville Center, N.Y.), and sophomore Alexis Fatigati (New Milford, N.J.) combined for a time of 1:57.32. The Friars return to action when they travel to Washington, D.C. on Friday, October 24. Providence will take on American University on Friday at 1:00 p.m., and then Georgetown and George Washington on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING (0-1)...The Providence College men’s swimming & diving team posted an 0-1 record last week. The Friars opened their season on Saturday, October 18 when they hosted Lehigh University at home in Providence, R.I. The Mountain Hawks outswam the Friars to a 155-80 win. Freshman Jordan Rivera (Rockville, Md.) was the only Friar to earn an individual first-place finish, winning the 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:13.89. PC also took first place in the 200-meter freestyle relay, when juniors Matthew Card (Bow, N.H.) and Tim Reilly (Floral Park, N.Y.), freshman Matt Green (Westfield, N.J.), and senior Ryan Clark (Taunton, Mass.) combined for a time of 1:41.98. The Friars return to action when they travel to Washington, D.C. on Friday, October 24. Providence will take on American University on Friday at 1:00 p.m., and then Georgetown and George Washington on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Danette Doetzel (Sr., Macklin, Saskatchewan)... Doetzel led the Providence women’s cross country team to an 11th-place team finish at Pre-Nationals on October 18 in Terre Haute, Ind. She finished 10th individually at the meet in a time of 20:23.8.
David McCarthy (So., Waterford, Ireland)... McCarthy led the Providence men’s cross country team to a ninth-place team finish at Pre-Nationals on October 18. He led the way for the Friars with a sixth-place individual finish in a time of 23:40.8.
