MEN’S SOCCER (7-5-3, 4-5-1 BIG EAST)... The men’s soccer team won its lone match of the week, defeating Marquette, 2-0, on October 25 in Milwaukee, Wis. The Friars scored both goals in the first half as they benefitted from an own goal to take a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. In the 24th minute, senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) set up sophomore Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) who scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season. In goal, Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) recorded his career-high ninth shutout of the season.
Providence will play at Harvard on Tuesday, October 28 at 3:00 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (6-8-3, 1-7-3 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s soccer team concluded its season with a 1-1 record in BIG EAST action this past weekend. On Friday, October 24 the Friars battled St. John’s at Glay Field. Junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) opened the scoring in the 10th minute with her fourth goal of the season to give the Friars the 1-0 early lead. St. John’s was able to tie and then take the lead in the second half, and would go on to get the victory, 2-1. Then on Sunday, October 26, Providence celebrated six seniors on senior day with their season finale against Syracuse. Senior Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from classmate Kim Pine (Fairfield, Conn.) in the 12th minute to give PC an early 1-0 advantage. The Orange would even the score and take the lead in the second half. The Friars then evened the score at 2-2 as freshman Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from Camburn in the 84th minute. Then PC would seal the victory as sophomore Lindsey Trubia (Mystic, Conn.) headed in a cross from senior Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) in the 88th minute. The final was 3-2.
FIELD HOCKEY (11-8, 3-3 BIG EAST)... The Providence field hockey team posted a 2-0 record last week. On October 22, the Friars posted a 6-2 victory over cross-city rival Brown at Warner Roof in Providence, R.I. Five different Friars found the back of the cage led by junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine), who scored two goals. Sophomore Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) also recorded four points on the day with one goal and two assists. On October 26, the Friars defeated Georgetown 6-2 and clinched a berth to the BIG EAST Field Hockey Tournament for the third-consecutive season. Poulin recorded the first three goal game of her career to lead PC. Providence last made three-straight appearances in the BIG EAST Tournament from 1996-1998.
The Friars close out the regular-season schedule against No. 17 Massachusetts on Saturday, November 1 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Prior to the game, the Friars will honor their four-member senior class.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men’s cross country team placed third at the Central Connecticut Invitational at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, Conn. on October 25. Junior Michael Anderson (Ajax, Ontario) led the charge placing second on the five-kilometer course in a time of 14:49. Sophomore Stephen Hankinson (Summit, N.J.) and senior Ben Saviet (Sutton, Mass.) crossed the finish line in eighth (15:25) and ninth (15:26) place, respectively. Sophomore Nicholas Barao (Riverside, R.I.) finished 12th (15:34) and freshman Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) placed 43rd (16:06). Freshman Zachary Hoagland (Hatfield, Pa.) finished 48th (16:11) and senior Nick Berluti (Westwood, Mass.) placed 53rd (16:15).
The next race for the Friars is Friday October 31, 2008 when they compete at the BIG EAST Championship at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.

VOLLEYBALL (13-12)...The Providence College volleyball team posted a 1-1 record this past week. On Tuesday, October 21, the Friars fell to intra-state rival Bryant, 3-2, in Smithfield, R.I. Senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had another strong outing, posting a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. The 5-10 middle blocker also registered eight total blocks. On Saturday, October 25, PC defeated Chicago State, 3-1, in Mullaney Gymnasium. For the first time this season, three Friar players recorded double-digit kills in the match. Senior Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) led the PC attack with 15 kills, hitting at a blistering .483 clip. Junior Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) posted 12 kills and contributed four digs and two service aces, hitting at an impressive .600 percentage. Senior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was a force at the net. The 5-10 middle blocker registered nine total blocks along with her 11 kills.
This week, the Friars host Hartford on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Mullaney Gymnasium. Over the weekend, Providence will compete in the NJIT Halloween Classic in Newark, N.J. On Friday, October 31, the Friars will face NJIT at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, November 1, PC will square off against Bryant at 10:00 a.m. and Howard at 2:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY (3-5, 2-2 HOCKEY EAST)... The Providence College women’s ice hockey team went 1-1 this past weekend and earned its second Hockey East victory of the season on Sunday as they defeated the University of Maine, 4-2. The Friars put over 50 shots (51) on goal for the first time since shooting 65 on net in a 7-2 victory over Maine on December 1, 2007. Providence improved to 3-5-0 (2-2-0 Hockey East). Freshman Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) registered two goals and now ranks first in the nation with five power-play goals. Senior Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario) registered one goal and one assist on the night while Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) tallied her third goal of the season. Senior Danielle Ciarletta (Blaine, Minn) made 22 saves to earn the victory. On Saturday, the Friars fell to No.7 Boston College, 3-1. Kate Bacon (Chanhassen, Minn.) put PC on board first as she scored her first career goal on a short-handed tally in the first period. Senior Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) earned the assist on the play.
Providence will travel to Boston University on Saturday, November 1 to take on the Terriers at 3:00 p.m.
MEN’S HOCKEY (2-2, 0-2 HOCKEY EAST)... The men’s hockey team posted a 1-1 record last week. On Friday, October 24, the Friars were defeated, 4-1, at UMass Lowell as senior Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) scored his first goal of the season. The following night, PC posted a 6-4 victory at Holy Cross. The Friars used six different goal scorers. In addition, sophomores Austin Mayer (Providence, R.I.) and Paul Golden (Milton, Mass.) as well as freshman Daniel New (White Plains, N.Y.) all scored their first career goals for the Friars. Junior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) and sophomores Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) and Ian O’Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) accounted for the other three goals. In net, freshman Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) made 17 saves to earn his first career win.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, October 31 with a game at UMass.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING (0-4)...The Providence College women’s swimming & diving team posted an 0-3 record last week. The Friars traveled to Washington, D.C. for two days worth of meets versus three schools. On Friday, October 24, Providence faced American University, swimming to a 192-99 loss. Sophomore Courtney Larcom (Morristown, N.J.) stood out for the Friars, earning two individual first place finishes at the meet. Larcom won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:59.36) and the 500-yard (5:21.76). On Saturday, October 25, the Friars took on Georgetown University and George Washington University. The Friars dropped to GU, 216-81, and GWU, 196-87.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, November 1 when they travel to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Fairfield University. The meet is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING (1-3)...The Providence College men’s swimming & diving team posted an 1-2 record last week. The Friars traveled to Washington, D.C. for two days worth of meets versus three schools. On Friday, October 24, Providence faced American University. Led by junior Mathew Card (Bow, N.H.) and sophomore James Cebulski (Trumbull, Conn.), the Friars earned their first win of the season, defeating the Eagles, 209-102. Card earned two individual first-place finishes on the day, capturing the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.79) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.38). He then teamed with seniors Ryan Clark (Taunton, Mass.) and Justin Rich (Branford, Conn.) and freshman Matt Green (Westfield, N.J.) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.05). Cebulski won both diving events of the meet, earning 145.20 and 215.62 points respectively. On Saturday, October 25, Providence faced Georgetown University and George Washington University. Cebulski continued his success, earning a first-place finish in the 1-meter diving event with 187.10 points. The Friars fell to GU, 210-82, and GWU, 187-99.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, November 1 when they travel to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Fairfield University. The meet is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Nellie Poulin (Jr., Oakland, Maine)... Poulin led the Providence field hockey team with five goals last week in victories over Brown (6-2) and Georgetown (6-2). She netted her five goals on just seven shot attempts, and recorded the first three-goal game of her career against the Hoyas as the Friars wrapped up a berth to the BIG EAST Tournament for the third-straight season.
Laura Veharanta (Fr., La Verne, Calif.)... Veharanta helped lead the women’s ice hockey team to its second Hockey East victory of the season in a 4-2 defeat of Maine. The freshman recorded her team-high fifth and sixth goals of the season. She ranks first in the conference with five power-play goals and currently ranks second in the nation in scoring among Hockey East freshmen.
Matt Marcin (So., Wilmington, Del.)... Marcin scored one goal to lead the men’s soccer team to a crucial victory over Marquette on Saturday, October 25.
