Development of Western Civilization lecture series: "Opening the Canon in DWC"
Cedric de Leon, "Freud/Fanon: Teaching Beyond the Core"
Please join us for the first in an occasional series of presentations/discussions geared toward welcoming new ideas, cultural traditions, and disciplinary perspectives into the broad enterprise of the Development of Western Civilization program. The purpose of these sessions is to think in fresh ways about the idea of the Western tradition, and to explore connections between the work of DWC and the many disciplines and departments across the College. All members of the College community are welcome.
The first presenter will be Cedric de Leon, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Providence College, who will be presenting on the Martinican psychoanalyst and revolutionary Frantz Fanon's engagements with Sigmund Freud. Fanon, author of Black Skin, White Masks (1952) and The Wretched of the Earth (1961), was among the twentieth century's most important commentators on the psychodynamics of colonialism. Professor de Leon's presentation aims at demonstrating the contemporary relevance of anti-colonial theory as well as its capacity to illuminate and extend western intellectual traditions.
