MEN’S BASKETBALL (3-0)... The men’s basketball team posted a perfect 3-0 mark last week, capturing the World Vision Invitational Title at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The Friars began the round-robin tournament on Friday, November 13 with a 96-53 victory over Bryant in the season opener for both teams. The 43-point victory for the Friars marked the team’s largest margin of victory since PC defeated Morgan State by 44 points in a 91-47 win on December 27, 2001. On Saturday, November 14, Providence knocked off Bucknell, 76-65. The Friars dominated the Bison on the boards, holding a 46-31 advantage. Of the team’s 46 rebounds, 24 came on the offensive end of the floor, leading to a 19-6 edge in second-chance points for the Friars. In the championship game, the Friars edged Mercer, 79-77, on Sunday, November 15. Junior guard/forward Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) paced the Friars with 26 points and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a c
areer-high 22 rebounds against the Bears, the most by a Providence player since Michael Smith grabbed 26 boards on Jan. 25, 1994 in a 96-82 win for PC against Syracuse. With the win, Providence moved to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2005-06. This week, the Friars hit the road for a matchup with SEC opponent Alabama on Friday, November 20 at 8:00 p.m. in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
 
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2-0)... The Providence College women’s basketball team opened the season with back-to-back victories last week. On November 13, the Friars defeated cross-city rival Brown, 83-50, at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, R.I. Four Friars reached double figures in the victory, led by junior Mi-Khida Hankins’ (Baltimore, Md.) game-high 17 points. Freshman Symone Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) came off the bench to score 16 points in her collegiate debut. On November 15, Providence posted an 88-57 victory over Saint Joseph’s at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Five Friars reached double figures on the day, including Hankins and senior Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.), who each recorded a double-double. Hankins tallied 21 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six assists, while Cournoyer recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) led all scorers with 24 points. The Friars registered back-to-back 80+ point games for the first time
since 1998. Providence returns to action on Friday, November 20 against Hartford at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
 
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The No. 21 Providence College women’s cross country team competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Saturday, November 14 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The Friar women placed second in a field of 35 teams with 70 points. The women’s squad automatically qualifies for a spot in the NCAA Cross Country Championship with its second-place team finish. The Friars were led by three runners who finished in the top-10 individually. Freshman Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) placed second overall in the field with a time of 22:08. Sophomore Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) completed the 6K course in fifth place with a time of 22:15. Senior Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) placed 10th overall with a time of 22:31. Rounding out the scorers for Providence were junior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.). Perron placed 20th (22:51), while Champagne completed the race in 33rd place (23:16). Greany, Davidson and Twohig each earn
ed All-Northeast Region honors for their individual performances. Providence will compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Monday, November 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
 
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The No. 23 Providence College men’s cross country team competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Saturday, November 14 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. PC placed third in a field of 36 institutions with 78 points. Sophomore Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) led all Friar runners with a second-place overall finish in the 10K race in a time of 30:46. Junior David McCarthy (Christchurch, New Zealand) placed fourth in a time of 31:07. Sophomore Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) finished 16th in the field with a time of 31:32. Sophomore Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.) completed the course in 25th place, while sophomore Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) rounded out the scorers with a 31st place finish (32:17). Carey and McCarthy each earned All-Northeast Region honors for their individual finishes. The Friars received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship and will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. on Monday, November 23.
 
MEN’S SOCCER (10-7-3, 5-4-2 BIG EAST)... The Providence College men’s soccer team posted a 0-1 record last week. The Friars were defeated, 2-0, by No. 14 St. John’s in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Friday, November 13 in Morgantown, W.Va. The Red Storm scored two goals late in the first half and held on for the win. The Friars controlled the second half as they outshot the Red Storm, 17-1, but could not cut into St. John’s lead. Overall, PC finished with a 23-6 advantage in shots. Senior defender Justin Kahle (Oceanport, N.J.) was named to the All-Tournament Team. Providence will wait until Monday, November 16 to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
 
VOLLEYBALL (10-16)... The volleyball team posted an 0-1 record last week. On Wednesday, November 11, the Friars were defeated at Manhattan, 3-0, in the team’s season finale. The Friars finish 2009 with a 10-16 record. In the match against the Lady Jaspers, Providence was led by a strong offensive outing from sophomore middle blocker Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.). Dolan paced the Friars with seven kills, hit at a blistering .636 clip and added three block assists. The match marked the last contest in the four-year career of lone Friar senior Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.). The 5-9 outside hitter recorded five kills and four digs in her final match in a Friar uniform.
 
MEN’S (2-2) & WOMEN’S (0-4) SWIMMING & DIVING... The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday to take on in-state foe Bryant University. The men’s team defeated Bryant, 143-118, while the women fell to the Bulldogs, 158.5-97.5. Senior Mathew Card (Bow, N.H.) swam well for the Friars, finishing first in the 50y freestyle event (22.30), 100y butterfly (54.35) and the 400y freestyle relay (3:19.91). Card earned 18 individual points and 15 points from the relay events. The women’s squad was paced by junior Alexis Fatigati (New Milford, N.J.) who won the 200y IM in a time of 2:25.15, earning the Friars nine points in the process. Fatigati placed second in the 500y freestyle with a time of 5:31.08. The women’s team also did well in the 400y freestyle relay, placing first and second. Freshman Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.), freshman Sam Schlich (Massepequa, N.Y.), sophomore Caroline Caliri (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Carrie Lamb (New Paltz, N.Y.) teamed up to create the
first-place squad. The Friars are back in action on Friday, December 4 as they travel south to compete in the Harold Anderson Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
 
WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY (4-5-5, 3-2-3-2 HOCKEY EAST)... The Providence College women’s hockey team finished the weekend with a 1-1 record. PC split a home-and-home series with No. 7/8 Boston University. The Friars fell by a score of 5-3 at BU on Saturday, November 14. Juniors Jean O’Neill (Strafford, Pa.) and Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) each netted a power-play goal and an assist. Sophomore Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) also scored on the power play. On Sunday, PC came away with a 6-2 victory behind a hat trick from freshman Nicole Anderson (Jordan, Minn.) and a four point (1 g, 3 a) performance from Cottrell. Anderson tied the game in the first with assists from Cottrell and Jennifer Friedman (San Gabriel, Calif.). Junior Leigh Riley (Lexington, Mass.) put home a game-tying goal in the second. It was the first of her career. Anderson completed the hat trick with two goals in 46 seconds, including the game winner and a power-play strike. Cottrell and Alyse Ruff added goals to finish out the scoring. S
ophomore goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) made 41 saves to earn the win. PC will host No. 9 Northeastern on Friday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Schneider Arena. Cottrell, Lacasse and Amber Yung (Rockville, Va.) will compete with the Hockey East All-Stars in a exhibition against Team USA on November 22 at 1:00 p.m. in Durham, N.H. Assistant coach Meredith Roth will help coach the Hockey East All-Stars and former Friar great Karen Thatcher (‘06) will compete with Team USA.
 
MEN’S HOCKEY (5-3-0, 1-2-0 HOCKEY EAST)... The Providence College men’s hockey did not compete last week. The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Brown University in the 24th Annual Mayor’s Cup at Schneider Arena.
