Providence College Students, Faculty, and Staff:
Please help us collect books and textbooks during the month of December (December 1st – 21st) for three very worthy causes: the Textbooks for Ghana Project, Providence Books through Bars, and Habitat for Humanity. If you have books you have already read and don’t need any more, textbooks that you no longer need, or textbooks that you cannot sell back to the bookstore, consider donating them at the following locations around campus:
* PC Bookstore
* Feinstein Faculty Lounge
* Helen Burt Lounge in Alumni Hall
* OAS
* Library
* Peterson Hall
* Harkins Faculty Lounge
* Campus Ministry
* Science Mailroom (Sowa 237)
Thank you for your generosity! Your books and textbooks will be put to good use. If you want to know more about these causes, here is more information:
Textbooks for Ghana Project: Can you imagine taking a college course without the benefit of a textbook? Can you imagine teaching when handouts distributed in class or posted on the web as the only resources for your students? Students and professors at the University of Ghana, where Engineering-Physics-Systems Professor Stephen Mecca is presently teaching while on sabbatical, do just this because the cost of a single textbook is comparable to their tuition for the semester. Books collected here at Providence College and other Rhode Island universities will be transported directly to Ghana to be distributed to students at the University of Ghana. This project is being sponsored jointly by the faculty and student clubs in the Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Engineering-Physics-Systems Departments. Questions should be directed to Kathy Coppola at X2164.
Providence Books through Bars: Providence Books through Bars is devoted to supplying free reading materials to encourage literacy and self-development among prison inmates, many of whom lack a complete high school education. This program aims to raise prisoner self-esteem, improve the lives and communities of prisoners, and to greatly reduce the likelihood of their return to the prison system.
Habitat for Humanity International: Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built over 300,000 houses, providing shelter for more than 1.5 million people in over 90 countries around the world. Help us continue to build by donating your books! They will be resold as a fundraiser, with profits helping to fund new houses and literacy programs in Africa. This program is sponsored by the PC chapter of Habitat for Humanity, through Campus Ministry.
