REPORT #14 - Monday, December 8, 2008

MEN’S BASKETBALL (6-3, 0-0 BIG EAST)...The men’s basketball team posted a 2-0 record last week at the Dunkin Donuts’ Center. On Wednesday, December 3, the Friars defeated cross-town rival Brown, 86-62. Sophomore guard Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led the Friars with 22 points and added five rebounds, marking the second time that Brooks has eclipsed the 20-point mark this season. For the game, PC held the Bears to just 19 field goals and 33.3 percent shooting, both season bests for the Friar defense.
On Saturday, December 6, PC beat in-state rival URI, 66-65, in a classic showdown. Senior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) hit two free throws in the game’s final minute to clinch the game for the Friars. Senior Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) led Providence with game-highs of 21 points and eight rebounds. After the Rams led, 39-38, at the break, PC held URI to 36 percent shooting in the second half and played stifling defense on senior Jimmy Baron, as the URI star point guard was held without a field goal in the final 17:03 of the game.
The Friars are off until Wednesday, December 17 when they face Jackson State at 7:00 p.m. at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (4-4, 0-0 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s basketball team posted a 2-0 record last week. On December 3, the Friars defeated Massachusetts, 75-63, in Amherst, Mass. Junior Emily Cournoyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) recorded a season-high 18 points, while Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds. On December 6, Providence won its second-straight game with a 70-58 victory over Harvard in Providence, R.I. Cournoyer posted the second double-double of her collegiate career on 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Mi-Khida Hankins (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Friars with 18 points.
Providence returns to action on Tuesday, December 16 against Buffalo at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played in Buffalo, N.Y.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (9-6-2, 5-2-1 HOCKEY EAST)... The Providence College women’s ice hockey team traveled to Maine for a weekend series against the Black Bears. Providence came away with back-to-back 4-1 victories to inch closer to the top of the Hockey East standings. In game one, Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) notched a goal and two assists while fellow freshman Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) made 28 saves to lead the Friars. Junior Jackie Duncan (Kitchener, Ontario) started PC off with her second goal of the season at 14:51 of the first period after corralling a pass from classmate Colleen Martin (Woburn, Mass.). Freshman Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.) notched a goal in the second period with assists from sophomore Amber Yung (Rockville, Va.) and Veharanta, before senior Mari Pehkonen (Tampere, Finland) closed out the game with a power-play goal in the third period.
Game two saw Veharanta notch her second of the weekend and her team-leading 12th of the season. Sophomore Jean O’Neill (Strafford, Pa.) tallied her first goal of the season as did captain Brittany Simpson (Barrie, Ontario) on a power-play strike in the final period. Junior Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) finished off the Black Bears with an empty-net goal in the final minutes.
Providence has a 23-day hiatus before traveling to New Haven, Conn. to face off against ECAC foe Yale on December 30. The game will be held at Ingalls Rink, starting at 3:00 p.m.

MEN’S HOCKEY (2-12-1, 0-8-1 HOCKEY EAST)... In its lone game last week, the men’s hockey team was defeated, 5-2, at Quinnipiac. Junior Chris Eppich (Surrey, B.C.) scored his first career goal as sophomores Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) and Jordan Kremyr (Cloverdale, B.C.) assisted on the goal. Freshman Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) scored PC’s second goal as juniors John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) and Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) were credited with assists.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, December 9 when they travel to Brown to face the Bears in the 23rd Annual Mayor’s Cup.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK...The Providence College women’s indoor track team competed at the Fordham Invitational on Friday, December 5 and the Brown Invitational on Saturday, December 6. In the mile at the Fordham meet, senior Katie Elliot (Penfield, N.Y.) finished second in a time of 5:10.9 and Katherine Schock (Norwood, Mass.) placed fourth (5:15.0). In the jumping events, sophomore Caley Brown (Darien, Conn.) finished third in the high jump clearing the height of 4’7". At the Brown Invitational, senior Katie Elliot (Penfield, N.Y.) had similar success, winning the 1,000 meter run in a time of 2:59.96, while teammates Katherine Schock placed second (3:00.65), and Amie Schumacher (Wolcott, Conn.) finished third (3:01.15). In the jumping events, junior Caitlin Lawrence (Franklin, Mass.) placed fourth in the high jump, clearing a height of 5’2". The women look forward to their next competion at the University of Rhode Island Invitational on January 16, 2009.

MEN’S INDOOR TRACK...The Providence College men’s indoor track team competed at the Fordham Invitational on Friday, December 5 and the Brown Invitational on Saturday, December 6. Senior Nick Berluti (Westwood, Mass.) led the Friar men with a victory in the mile in a time of 4:22.7. Sophomore Nicholas Barao (Riverside, RI) placed third in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 8:49.8. On the sprinting side, sophomore Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took third in the 400 meter dash (53.2), followed by senior teammate Alan Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in fourth (53.3). Sophomore Thomas Manglaviti (Southhampton, N.Y.) placed second in the 200 meter dash, his time was 23.4. At the Brown Invitational, senior Nick Berluti (Westwood, Mass.) once again was victorious, this time in the 1000 meter run (2:31.19), followed by sophomore teammate Nicholas Barao who placed second (2:36.98) and freshman Corey Brunelle (Woonsocket, R.I.) in third (2:39.60). In the 3,000 meter run, Providence took the top two places with fre
shman Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore Stephen Hankinson (Summit, N.J.) finishing respectively with times of 8:50.29 and 8:50.78. In the sprints, sophomore Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) placed third (37.42). In the jumps, Phillip Connaughton (Broken Arrow, Okla.) took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19’ 10".
The Friar men look forward to the next competion at the University of Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday, January 17, 2009.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING (2-6)...The Providence College women’s swimming & diving team competed at the Harold Anderson Invitational in Kingston, R.I. on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6. The Friars had a successful weekend, with two student-athletes qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships in four different events. As a team, the women placed fourth out of six teams, combining for 466.5 points. Host University of Rhode Island took first place with 904.5 points. Sophomore Courtney Larcom (Morristown, N.J.) earned qualifying times in both the 500 and 1650 freestyle. Junior Carrie Lamb (New Paltz, N.Y.) also qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in two events. Lamb excelled in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke. Larcom and Lamb join seniors Blair Flynn (Middletown, R.I.) and Lauren Sepe (Warwick, R.I.) and sophomore Alexis Fatigati (New Milford, N.J.) who have already qualified for the Championships. The BIG EAST Championships are February 18-21 in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Friars return to head-to-head action on January 17 when they travel to Orono, Maine to take on the University of Maine at 11:00 a.m.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING (4-3)....The Providence College men’s swimming & diving team competed at the Harold Anderson Invitational in Kingston, R.I. on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6. The Friars had a successful weekend, with five student-athletes qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships in seven different events. As a team, the men placed second out of seven teams, combining for 658 points. Host University of Rhode Island took first place with 758 points. Freshmen Matt Green (Westfield, N.J.) and Collin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.), juniors Tim Reilly (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Mike Loftis (Branford, Conn.), and senior Chris Ray (Basking Ridge, N.J.) all made qualifying times. Green (50-yard freestyle), Casciano (100-yard butterfly), Reilly (100, 200-yard backstroke), Loftis (100, 200-yard freestyle), and Ray (100-yard breaststroke) join junior Mathew Card (Bow, N.H.) who had already qualified. The BIG EAST Championships are February 18-21 in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Friars return to head-to-head action on January 17 when they travel to Orono, Maine to take on the University of Maine at 11:00 a.m.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Laura Veharanta (Fr., La Verne, Calif.)... Veharanta finished the weekend with four points after notching two goals and two assists to lead Providence to a weekend sweep of Hockey East foe Maine. She continues to lead all Hockey East freshmen with 18 points (12g, 6a) this season.
Emily Cournoyer (Jr., North Attleboro, Mass.)... Cournoyer led the Friar women’s basketball team to a 2-0 record last week. In two games, she averaged 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots per game. On December 6, Cournoyer posted the second double-double of her collegiate career with 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 70-58 victory over Harvard. Earlier in the week, she netted a season-high 18 points in a 75-63 win over UMass on December 3.
Weyinmi Efejuku (Sr., Fresh Meadows, N.Y.)... Efejuku averaged 15.0 ppg during the men’s basketball team’s 2-0 week. Against Brown on December 3, the 6-5 guard contributed nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. On December 6 versus Rhode Island, Efejuku posted game-highs of 21 points and eight rebounds in the Friars 66-65 triumph. Efejuku hit a key three-pointer with 2:28 remaining in the game that helped lift the team to its sixth win of the season.
