WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College women’s cross country team did not compete last week. The Friars return to action on Saturday, September 26 against Central Connecticut.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men’s cross country team did not compete last week. The Friars return to action on Saturday, September 26 against Central Connecticut.
  
FIELD HOCKEY (3-4, 0-1 BIG EAST)... The Providence College field hockey team posted a 1-2 record last week. The Friars lost to Northeastern, 3-2, on Wednesday, September 16. Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) and Ashlyn Hudson (Stoughton, Mass.) both scored goals against the Huskies. They also dropped their first BIG EAST match of the season to No. 6 Connecticut by the score of 4-0 on Saturday, September 19. On Sunday, September 20 the Friars defeated fourth-ranked and previously unbeaten Princeton, 2-1. It was two unanswered goals in the second half that propelled the Friars to victory. The first goal was scored by Julie Ruggieri (Barrington, R.I.). The game-winning goal was scored by freshman Nicole Fernandez (Tewksbury, Mass.), marking the first of her career. Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) recorded a season-high 12 saves in the victory over Princeton. She also helped to anchor a defense that held off a furious run of 19 penalty corners on the day.
The Friars are back in action next weekend as they travel to BIG EAST Conference opponent Syracuse on Saturday, September 26. A day later they face non-conference opponent Albany on the road.

MEN’S SOCCER (3-3, 0-2 BIG EAST)... The Providence College men’s soccer team posted a 0-2 record last week. The Friars were defeated at Rutgers, 2-1, in double overtime on Friday, September 18. Junior Nick Cianci (West Hartford, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Friars. On Sunday, September 20, Providence was defeated, 1-0, at Villanova.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, September 25 at 3:00 p.m. when they host Syracuse at Providence’s Glay Field.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-3-1, 0-1 BIG EAST)… The Providence College women’s soccer team posted a 1-1 record last week. The Friars were defeated by Connecticut, 2-0, on Friday, September 18. The Friars rebounded and defeated Sacred Heart, 1-0, on Sunday, September 20. Providence held the edge in shots, 13-6, and in shots on goal, 4-3, against the Pioneers. The game was scoreless until the 89th minute when junior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) crossed the ball into the six-yard box where senior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) was running on and scored the game-winning goal. The goal was Ricciardi’s first of the season and first game winner of her career.
The Friars are back in action on Thursday, September 24 when they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on the Orange at 7:00 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL (6-11)... The Providence College volleyball team posted a 2-3 record this past week. On Wednesday, September 15, the Friars fell to Dartmouth, 3-0, in Providence, R.I. Over the weekend, Providence competed in the South Carolina State Spikefest in Orangeburg, S.C. On Friday, September 18, the Friars defeated Hampton, 3-0, and dropped a 3-1 contest to Wofford. Freshman defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led PC with 26 digs on the day, including 16 against Wofford. On Saturday, September 19, the Friars fell to UNC-Asheville, 3-1, and defeated Winston-Salem State, 3-1. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Friars with 29 kills and hit at a blistering .464 clip in the two matches. Sophomore Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) notched 40 assists against Winston-Salem State and was named to the South Carolina State Spikefest All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
This week, the Friars host the Sixth Annual Friar Classic on September 25 and 26 in Mullaney Gymnasium. On Friday, September 25, PC will take on Coppin State at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 26, the Friars will battle St. Francis (N.Y.) at 11:00 a.m. and New Hampshire at 5:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (2-0, 0-0 BIG EAST)... The Providence College women’s tennis team defeated the University of Hartford, 7-0, on Wednesday, September 16 in Providence, R.I., and Holy Cross, 6-1, on Thursday, September 17 in Worcester, Mass. The Friars were led by freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), who conceded only one game in her first two matches as the Friars’ No. 1 singles player. Aviles-Duron also teamed up with junior Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) to win both No. 1 doubles matches this week. Against Hartford, the Friars won with conviction, winning every singles match in two sets. Coach Kyle Labranche was duly impressed and said, “The team played very well.” The Friars found a tougher opponent the next day against the Holy Cross Crusaders. The Crusaders pushed the Friars to three sets in four of the six singles matches and won the doubles point on a decisive tie break.
